Steamer Superior

The vessel that would become the Superior began her life in 1881 at Fort Howard, Wisconsin as the scow sloop Mentor — a flat-bottom sailing vessel built for cargo transport. Converted to a steamer in 1888, she spent decades carrying bulk cargo across the Great Lakes before being declared unfit for service in 1916. That same year, she underwent a major rebuild at Marine City, Michigan, emerging as the Superior — converted to a sand dredge with a new official number and expanded dimensions.

The Wreck Today

Only the bottom hull structure and a few small artifacts remain. Due to low water levels, much of the hull is visible above the surface — the upper cabins and sides lost over the years to a fire in 1929, salvage operations, or wave action. A small winch remains in deeper water near the entrance to DeTour Harbor. The shallow, accessible site makes for an interesting stop for snorkelers, kayakers, and divers curious about the area’s industrial maritime past.
