Shale Beach

Located just south of Marblehead, Shale Beach is one of Drummond Island’s most visually striking shorelines. Stretching nearly two miles along Lake Huron, the beach is made up of smooth, white shale stones shaped into rolling ridges by the lake’s waves — unlike anything else on the island.

Getting There

Shale Beach is accessible by off-road vehicle only, reached via designated ORV routes along the island’s eastern side. The drive is part of the appeal, making it a natural stop for Jeep and off-road enthusiasts already exploring the area.

What to Expect

With no developed amenities, this remote shoreline offers a quiet, off-the-grid experience ideal for picnicking, beachcombing, photography, and skipping stones. Swimming is not recommended due to uneven footing and changing conditions. Come for the scenery, and leave it as you found it.
