The Mystery Barge

The Mystery Barge is one of Drummond Island’s most intriguing underwater sites. As its name suggests, the vessel’s identity and history are unknown. Measuring approximately 64 feet in length with a 14-foot beam, it appears to have once been a small steamer or schooner that was later converted into a barge.

The Wreck Today

The vessel sits nearly upright on the lakebed in about 50 feet of water, hull remarkably intact with only minor damage to some outer planking — damage that may explain how she ultimately sank. The forward cargo hold is still filled with coal, offering a clear glimpse into her working past.

A steam winch remains on the aft deck, though no boiler is present. A rigid hose nearby suggests steam power was supplied from shore. There is no rudder, and the towing arrangement is simple and utilitarian — a heavy chain wrapped around the stem of the vessel. A name board is still attached, but time and water have erased any readable lettering, leaving the barge’s true identity a mystery.
