Tug Silver Spray
Built in West Bay City, Michigan, by F. W. Wheeler & Co. for Henry Corcan of Eagle Harbor, the tug Silver Spray measured 54 feet in length with a 15-foot beam. From 1895 to 1924, her home port was Marquette, Michigan, where she likely worked primarily on Lake Superior.
Drummond Island Connection
From 1925 to 1939, the Silver Spray was owned by the Kreetan Company of Drummond Island, a lumber operation based at Johnswood on Scammon Cove. When the company went out of business, the tug was abandoned near Meade Island on the west side of Scammon Cove. Although she remained listed as an active vessel as late as 1939, she may have been laid up well before that time.
The Wreck Today
The Silver Spray rests in shallow water with her lower hull intact. The upper deck and cabin structure are gone and the engine has been salvaged, but the boiler remains in place. The shallow depth and protected location make this an excellent spot for snorkeling and casual exploration.
